How to convert Seconds to Minutes in Excel?

Microsoft Excel makes it much easier for those who work with spreadsheets. But things as simple as converting seconds to minutes can quickly become tedious if you struggle to find the right formula to get the job done quickly.

Although you can convert the seconds to minutes by dividing the seconds column by 60, this does not give the result in the desired format. If you z. B. Divide 90 seconds by 60, you get 1.5, which is not wrong, but if you want minutes in MM:SS (24 hour) format, where 100 seconds is like 1:40 (one minute and forty seconds), you need a little more judgment.

To convert seconds to minutes in Excel so they can be output in mm:ss format, divide the Seconds column by the total number of seconds per day. Are you dizzy yet? Well, you don’t have to, because we will explain and show in a few steps the process of converting seconds to minutes in Excel with an example.

In the following example, our Seconds column is A and cell A3 has the first value. We convert the entire column from seconds to minutes, which then appear in column B.

Step one: Right-click on column B (minutes) and choose Format cells from the options that appear.

Step two: Now in the Cell Format box on the left sidebar, select Custom and then scroll down to select mm:ss from the list of options that appears under Type (on the right). Then click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

If you cannot find the format of mm:ss, you can also enter it in the field to the right under Type.

Step three: Then select the first field under the Minute column, cell B3 in our example, type in the following formula and press Enter.

=A3/86400

We divided the first box in the Seconds column by 86400 because that is the number of seconds per day.

You will see that the value in B3 is converted to minutes and displayed in mm:ss format.

Step four: Now click on the small button in the bottom corner of cell B3 and drag it to the end of the column next to the cell where column A (seconds) ends.

As you can see here, we dragged it to B10, where our second column ends with A10.

As soon as you release the mouse, all cells selected during dragging are converted from seconds to minutes and seconds.

If you don’t want to manually drag the first cell down (as in step 4), you can also follow the steps below to convert the entire Seconds column directly to Minutes.
